      • The original Palace was constructed under the auspices of Lt. Governor Alexander Spotswood, royal governor from 1710 to 1722.
      • Spotswood also created the Palace's elaborate gardens.
      • He owned a book on the gardens of Versailles, so may have nurtured French-style arbors as a cool respite from a Tidewater Virginia summer.
